The Hudson River Valley Institute (HRVI) at Marist College hosts a conference, “New York’s 400 Years Celebrating America’s First River, the Hudson,” on September 25 and 26, and a play about Henry Hudson on September 27, as part of the state’s Hudson-Fulton-Champlain Quardicentennial celebration. Keynote speakers, panel sessions and receptions discuss all things Hudson River Valley.
Topics include the significance of the Hudson River, Dutch-American relations, Hudson River Valley artists, architecture and landmarks, and the valley’s first inhabitants. The conference is sponsored by HRVI in conjunction with the Franklin and Eleanor Roosevelt Institute, the Hudson River Valley Greenway, the Hudson River Valley National Heritage Area, the National Park Service, and the Hudson-Fulton-Champlain Quadricentennial Commission and Office.
Friday’s events will be held at the Henry Wallace Visitor & Education Center, located at the FDR Presidential Library and Historic Site in Hyde Park. Marist hosts Saturday’s events in the Student Center on its Poughkeepsie campus. The conference is free and open to all.
“This conference showcases the historical and cultural resources of the Hudson River Valley National Heritage Area,” said Colonel James M. Johnson, executive director of the institute. "By the time the conference ends, we hope that all involved will have been inspired by the crucial role that New York has played in America's history and culture.”
Space is limited and those interested in participating should reserve a place by contacting HRVI at 845/575-3052 or by email at HRVI@marist.edu . For a schedule of the weekend’s events, visit www.HudsonRiverValley.org
On Sunday, September 27 at 2pm, “The River of Tides: A Play About Henry Hudson’s Journey on the River That Came to Bear His Name," is held in the Nelly Goletti Theatre, in Marist’s Student Center. The play by Joseph Bruchac is presented by Marist College, Pace University, and the Smithsonian’s National Museum of the American Indian.
The Quadricentennial is a statewide celebration of New York’s past 400 years with a focus on Henry Hudson, Samuel De Champlain, and Robert Fulton.
“The conference would not be possible without the generous federal funding provided through the National Park Service by Congressman Maurice Hinchey, the New York State support from Director Tara Sullivan and the Quadricentennial Office, and a gift from Central Hudson Gas and Electric Corporation," acknowledged Colonel Johnson.
The Hudson River Valley Institute at Marist College is the academic arm of the Hudson River Valley National Heritage Area. HRVI publishes a peer-reviewed journal of regional studies. HRVI publishes essays, poems, documents, book reviews, photographs, and paintings in the Hudson River Valley Review, which is issued twice a year. The most recent issue, Spring 2009, is a special Quadricentennial commemorative issue. To learn more about this issue and the Review in general, visit www.HudsonRiverValley.org/review
