July Quadricentennial Events Set in Poughkeepsie

logo“We're excited about the many events that will bring visitors to Poughkeepsie during July, from the opening of our Tourism Center at the old Smith Brothers Restaurant to the Dedication of Upper Landing, where the city began doing business in the 18th century, said Nancy Cozean, City of Poughkeepsie Chair for the Hudson Fulton Champlain Quadricentennial.

July 24: The City's Quadricentennial Tourism Center opens at the former Smith Brothers Restaurant, 13 Market Street, with a display of local art, murals and city information. The free exhibit is open from noon to 2pm.

July 31: Dedication of Upper Landing. The site where Poughkeepsie began doing business is being dedicated to mark its significant manufacturing and production contributions. The property, which includes the Hoffman and Reynolds Houses, is located right under the Walkway Over The Hudson. The Dedication includes a bronze plaque memorial, sculpted by artist Alex Baer;11am-4pm.

This early Dutch and Huguenot property provides a starting point for the city to outline its earliest trade and industrial roots. City historian George Lukacs noted, “Our earliest maps show the historic houses and Upper Landing from the early 1700’s with Hoffman House. The Reynolds House was built in the 1820s. To reconstruct facets of these high point in manufacturing, we've recreated an example of an early general store, complete with information panels and artifacts.

August 1-2: Along with the celebration of Poughkeepsie’s oldest standing home, check out an antique car show with vendors on Saturday noon-4pm, at Waryas Park, Main St., Poughkeepsie. Also take a self-guided tour of the City's stained glass windows. The Upper Landing Industrial Arts and Artifacts Fair runs from Friday, July 31 to Sunday, August 2 and is open Saturday 11am-4pm and Sunday noon-4pm. It showcases new technology as well as displays some of the more than 1,000 items once manufactured in Poughkeepsie.

“July is normally a month when many people get away. We're thrilled at how busy and exciting July is here in the City. Visit Poughkeepsie and I assure you, you'll be richly entertained,” Nancy Cozean said.
